Tromarama Takes Over Stedelijk Instagram

As part of the three-year Global Collaborations research project, this summer the Stedelijk Museum presents the first European solo exhibition by the Indonesian artist collective, Tromarama. The collective, which includes Febie Babyrose, Herbert Hans and Ruddy Hatumena, experiments with digital image-making techniques and animation. On July 15th, Tromarama hacked the Stedelijk Museum’s Instagram channel for a 24-hour period and made it their own. Blikopener Marcus van Esveld followed the activities of Tromarara from the weeks before the opening of their exhibition up to the online hack.

Artist-in-Residence: Bernard Akoi – Jackson (Part 3)

As part of its multi-year Global Collaborations programme, the Stedelijk Museum invited the Ghanaian artist Bernard Akoi-Jackson as an artist in residence. Akoi-Jackson has developed a project on the themes of culture and identity, in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum’s ‘Blikopeners’. The Blikopeners are young people, aged 15 to 19, with a fresh view of art. They have diverse backgrounds, follow different studies and come from different Amsterdam neighbourhoods. Bram Verhoef, himself an up-and-coming art professional, is following the project (his first two reports are available here and here) and gives us a report.

Together with Bernard I look back at the project, taking the exhibition as a point of departure. How did the project evolve? I also spoke with two of the Blikopeners who were actively involved in the project. What were their experiences?

‘Cheerful, but Critical’; Blikopener Marcus meets Tromarama

The Indonesian artist collective Tromarama experiments with digital image technologies and animation. As part of the Global Collaborations project, the Stedelijk Museum presents a solo exhibition with recent animations and new works by the collective. Tromarama consists of the artists Febie Babyrose, Herbert Hans Maruli and Ruddy Hatumena, and is based in Bandung, Indonesia. As part of the Blikopeners crew, I was invited to join the artists on their trip to Eindhoven and look at some art and design together with them. For the Global website, I have written my impression of this meeting, Tromarama’s exhibition and the 24-hour takeover of the Stedelijk’s social media platform, which the artists are currently preparing.
